Are you both idiots? One month isn't a 'resume gap'. A resume gap is something like a year of unemployment.

 

If they've agreed to him saying he quit there's no problem....he can say he wanted to move to another job for xyz reasons...

As for references, he can reach out to someone he worked with (superior to him) who likes him for a reference, but probably not someone he worked with if his work product/ability were part of why he lost the job...

But if he said he quitted and no relevant reference then the interviewers might be doubting his sincerity right? so if he brings to an interview a copy of the reference, then he might not be having any problems at all.

I think he was let go due to a compliance issue - I am definitely not sure since he said they were so vague and he was shocked and still clueless as to what the reasons are.
