Political Writer in Finance

Hi monkeys, One of my good friends is founding a conservative blog/newspaper for our school and wants me to help him run it/write articles for it. I'm a pretty conservative person and feel as if there are not enough conservative voices in the media (say whatever you want, but it's not my intention to turn this thread into a political shitshow). I'm definitely interested in doing this, but is it something that could hurt me down the road in finance, either as I go through recruiting or when I'm on the job and someone finds out? I won't be writing about anything that is particularly controversial, but then again, in the time of cancel culture, pretty much everything is controversial. Also, I most likely won't do this, but is there any chance it would be beneficial to list this on a resume, just as an interesting point about myself? I think it could show character/initiative by founding a newspaper, but the risk is almost certainly not worth any potential reward. What do you guys think?

Here's how I would put it: this thing will not hurt you only if it comes across as serious, well-vetted, and analytical. If this "newspaper" is just you and some other kid ranting about things you don't understand, then don't even bother trying to talk your way around it. If you have anything politics-related on your resume, I suggest describing it in an ideologically neutral way. I would also pay attention to what you're going to be writing about. If a firm finds an old article where you chant "Lock her up!" or defend the Muslim ban or something, then obviously you're toast. (I'm also slightly conservative - just making sure you understand what that word connotes for some people.)

Okay cool, and just because I'm curious, what would you say the conservative/liberal split in finance is?

Probably 60/40 leaning towards conservatives, based on my work in consulting and my friends in finance. Either way, everyone's quite moderate and level headed. Conservatives are more pro-business conservatives rather than culture war nutjobs, and liberals are just more generous or cognizant of social issues rather than "eat the rich" type radicals.
