Project to demonstrate competency?

Hi All,

I am a student that is currently anticipating a 2024 IB SA position. Id like to get a good foundation on my own of the technical skills required, in addition to reading as much as I can about the process. In the eyes of someone in the industry, what kind of project could I put together to demonstrate my ability and competence on the subject? I’m not talking for formal interviews, but just something to mention and have the option of pulling up as an example during coffee chats or to supplement an answer to the question “So what do you know already?”. A lot of the firms I am in talks with are LMM firms that don’t necessarily have the time or capital to train analysts from the ground up, so they emphasize the importance of having a solid foundation of knowledge coming in.

Sorry for the long explanation, but would appreciate any advice from those currently in the industry who may have a perspective from the other side of this. Thank you!
