Quitting IB Summer Analyst Internship

It’s become super obvious to me after only ~2 weeks that banking is not for me. I already have a back up career focus that I’ll be gunning for but to do so I would need to start prepping now. I’ve decided to leave my current firm to give myself that time - any tips for how to best approach HR with this?

Understand that it’s a super difficult discussion to have and a very extreme case, but it’s ultimately what’s right for me.

You should stick it out.

It's a summer internship. You should be able to both prep for a pivot and close out your current commitment. Many interns go through this. It gets easier after each week and two weeks isn't nearly enough time to make the decision you are about to make (a summer barely is). I went through something similar in the second week of my SA stint and wanted to jump ship ASAP, but I just kept taking it day by day. Eventually I got the hang of things and realized I was overreacting. I'm not saying this is your situation but it is not a good look to leave an internship two weeks in, if for no other reason, at least stick it out because you have taken a desirable seat from others who would basically kill for the opportunity you have been given.

Stick it out to avoid regret later on.

Unless you were a victim of harassment/abuse (after going through HR/personal counsel) or have extreme personal matters to attend to (which HR would probably be sympathetic to anyway), you really shouldn’t quit during the summer. I agree with the above sticking it out.
