Quitting Internship Early
Long story short I am about to start a 6 month internship at a smaller shop that ends in the first week of July and have an offer for a summer internship at a BB starting in the last week of June, should I ask the smaller shop to adjust the end date to two weeks earlier before I start or should I do it once I'm in the role?
Just resign and join the other place. Make sure that your notice period doesn't overlap your start date and you should be fine. Happens all the time and they will understand when you quit. Make sure you don't burn any bridges and give thorough explanation of your motivations.
Would this hamper my chance of getting a return offer though?
Ask halfway through.
Don’t do this, seniors have egos, made this mistake myself, learn from mine be ruthless and quit the lastest day possible taking into account notice
So it’s probably best to wait till the very end and then given in my notice, not even bringing it up beforehand ig
Was the 6 month internship your idea or their number?
I'd personally wait until you start, do a great job, and then talk to your manager around the 4.5 month mark (thinking 30 days notice) that you'll need to end a bit early for personal reasons. If you are doing well, no one is going to be that peeved if you have been killing it for months and then leave just 2 weeks early.
It's just an internship and it has an end date anyway, wouldn't get too worried about this
6 months is a Weird length but it was their idea
Just hand in your notice as close to the end as possible, as someone above said, It won't make a difference if you leave a few weeks early if you were performing well.
This is unethical as fuck and wouldn't recommend but be like:
1.) A family member has fallen sick and you need to take care of them.
2.) You need to look after a sibling as family is on holiday/in another country due to work or emergency
3.) You have a operation in Turkey for something - very easy to get letter from a clinic / dentist there. Done it myself multiple times for various reasons and it always works.
Say one of the 3 and then don't post your other offer on LinkedIn till after.
Or just explain it to your manager once you've started (develop a rapport first and preferably say this in a pub/social over a drink).
Good luck and congrats and your offers.
Last point is best, you can just tell the truth they won’t blame you…they prolly expect you to have a summer internship too, after all
