Diving into Real Estate Investment Banking (REIB) can indeed be a lucrative and rewarding career path, especially if you have a keen interest in both Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and the dynamic world of Investment Banking. Based on the WSO Dataset, it's clear that the intersection of CRE and IB offers a unique blend of transactional experience, financial analysis, and market strategy, making it an attractive field for many.
For those looking to intern and eventually build a career in Real Estate IB, targeting firms with a strong presence in Southern California could be a strategic move. While the context doesn't list specific firms in the Real Estate IB sector, it's worth noting that firms like Lincoln International, Jefferies & Company, and Lazard Freres are highly regarded in the broader investment banking landscape. These firms, among others, could potentially offer opportunities in Real Estate IB, given their comprehensive financial services and market reach.
Compensation in Investment Banking, including Real Estate IB, is generally attractive, reflecting the demanding nature of the work. As of September 2023, the WSO Dataset indicates that total average compensation varies by position, with Investment Banking Directors/MDs earning around $592K, Vice Presidents around $392K, Associates around $260K, and Analysts in their first, second, and third years earning between $168K to $187K. Interns and Summer Analysts/Associates can expect compensation in the range of $94K to $167K, prorated for the duration of their internships.
These figures highlight the financial rewards of a career in Investment Banking, including Real Estate IB. However, it's essential to consider other factors such as work-life balance, firm culture, and professional growth opportunities when choosing a career path. Networking, internships, and leveraging resources like the WSO Courses and Academy can provide valuable insights and help you make an informed decision about diving into Real Estate IB.

I really like it out of all the coverage groups because I find it transferrable to real life. You may be doing mostly corporate level stuff but you get the odd time asset level portfolio sale so you need to understand how to value commercial properties. If you want to be an entrepreneur one day and create your own real estate portfolio real estate can give you a breath of knowledge. You can also exit to real estate equity if you want. If you’re in the US it can be a fantastic career because they have over 200 public reits, and 80% of their volume is institutionally traded. Canada… meh… it’s fine but the deal flow won’t be as strong and we’re now down to what… 39 reits after tricon was privatized?
Hope this helps.
