Referral Meaning/Importance?

Hi there! I recently spoke with an MD and a VP at a BB and they said they would refer me to HR. I got an email the other day with the subject line "BB NAME Referral" basically just saying that they heard I was interested in applying and giving me the necessary steps to apply. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how referrals work from the inside and if they even do anything to help my application? It just seemed like an automatic email they send to everyone haha.

exact same thing happened to me too. I think the fact that I am an underclassmen made HR care a lot less. From what I've encountered, there are certain people directly involved in the hiring process with HR and they'll have way more immediate pull. The person I talked to was super helpful and senior enough but they never involved themselves with the internship process before. I've talked to other people who were directly placed in charge of recruitment. If any senior person really wants you to get an interview, I think they can still pull through though at least when you are the appropriate age. I've gotten a way more valuable referral from another person since then so definitely keep plugging along. PM me if you want because the contact actually showed me exactly what he did in terms of the referral.
