Rejected Offer - HR is asking who I took over them.
Context: I rejected a firms offer over a competing firm in the same industry.
Just out of curiosity, why does HR care, what benefit does this give them and what approach should be taken?

Nothing to gain by telling them. Let them find out on linkedin like everyone else
If you ghost them doesn’t that potentially get you blacklisted should you try to recruit there again? Isn’t there way more downside here?
Nothing to gain by telling them, but something to lose by not telling them.
No ones blacklisting a college kid who took another offer over them... Most likely by the time you're recruiting again the same HR people won't even be there or remember who you are. They deal with hundreds of kids every year
They do it to have a mark to market on their relative competitiveness in the industry. I don’t see the benefit in withholding the information. If they really wanted to, they could find out via LinkedIn or BrokerCheck.
I would be curious to see if anyone has a reason behind why you shouldn’t provide.
Tell them politely. Great opportunity to keep a bridge sturdy. No need to explain your decision rationale, but be nice and tell them
Agree with this point here. Would add / reiterate to hit on the positives of the place you are accepting at rather than the negatives of the place you are rejecting (if it comes up). People will naturally get defensive so don't give them a reason to (though they'll try anyways).
Advice holds for when you are leaving one job for another as well!
