Reputation & Comp. break down for Toronto IB firms, mostly boutiques?
Am a senior BBA student in university at a non-target. Last summer I interned doing origination/business development as a buy-side M&A advisor in a newer division of a boutique IB firm in Canada. It was a good experience & got exposure to the M&A world but I know some do not consider that role investment banking.
Bit more background on myself, have 3.2 GPA & am writing CFA L1 this august, finish up my undergrad degree then as well. In addition to the last internship also did an operations internship at one of the major banks & was president of my school's finance club. Like to think I have an alright resume despite a less than ideal GPA & going to a non-target. Have been able to cold email/call my way into talks with different boutiques. Also sent them decks with simple models for a proposed strategic acquisition and have gotten good feedback on it.
I could go back to the shop from the summer but want to explore my options & am seeking feedback on the following shops:
Blair Franklin:
Small team 3 associates & one analyst, have talked to & followed-up with 2 of the Associates & one of the analysts multiple times. Really good rapport with them there.
Fort Capital:
Cold called a partner & then booked a proper call. They really liked me & told me to send my CV. Unsure of when they'd be hiring but was told to follow-up & keep in touch.
Osprey:
Same as above, didn't hit off with the partner as well as with the above firm but still a positive interaction.
NewPoint Capital:
Cold called an associate, sent over my CV & the deck. Have the call Booked this week.
Valitas capital:
Booked a call with an analyst, went well. Have tried to follow-up but to no avail this is my weakest one right now, talked to them 5 months ago.
Had a good call with an analyst recently.
Know this one is not boutique. Had a good chat with a director, not MD but promoted up from VP & has been there for 6+ years joining as an analyst. We've chatted multiple times over the last 6 months. Told me they not hiring right now but to stay in touch and he said really liked my deck & said I was on the "top of his list now."
RBC Capital Markets:
Had one positive chat with an analyst there, he is newer on the team lateraled from a boutique.
