Revoking Chinese Student Visas. Impact To IB?

STATEMENT BY SECRETARY MARCO RUBIO

May 28, 2025

New Visa Policies Put America First, Not China

Under President Trump's leadership, the U.S. State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security to aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields. We will also revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong.

Is this a good idea and good for IB?

The whole H1-B visa program is Bs for banking.

The visa involves the firm affirming they couldn’t find anyone in the country to do the job. That just isn’t true and pulls down wages in IB

How often do you see Chinese international students in grad classes? I skipped the IB stint, so I don't really know how prevalent they are.

The real issue is that it makes finding talent for HF incrementally harder (it's already a pain, we've been interviewing candidates in the US for 9 months+ ).

Harder sure but not impossible, which is what the visa process was set up for

No, it could be impossible, upon reflection. The lack of talent coming from IB is mind-blowing. I feel like I'm basically interviewing mouth breathers at this point.

Anyone who supports this is against meritocracy and advocates for more DEI for American citizens. Politically, I don't think that's a bad thing, especially for careers that anyone can do, like IB or PE. Still, when we're talking about careers where brainpower actually matters, it becomes a real challenge.

Whenever you limit the candidate pool, the odds of finding someone suitable for an HF gig drop significantly. As I mentioned earlier, it probably won't impact IB, but will be felt in HF, especially if this trend continues for other internationals.
