SA Preparation

I signed an offer for next summer at a boutique and have some time on my hands until then. I'm concerned that market conditions will still be tough next year, and return offer rates will be low. Please share any suggestions for how I can prepare well for next summer to ensure a return offer.

Thanks

Frankly, you have 2 years until you need to worry about a FT job if you're doing an internship in 2024. The M&A market should be fine in 2025 and back to normal. If the markets haven't recovered half a decade after the start of a recession, we have bigger problems on our hands than an intern hoping for a return offer from a small IB shop.

When you say boutique, I’m not sure whether you’ll be entering the depths of hell at Moelis where you need to perform out of your ass or if it’s something a little less intense. Either way, i’d recommend reading the WSJ everyday just to stay on top of the markets and form an opinion about what’s going on. If you’re in a coverage role, read about that sector and the deals that are going on. If you are in a product group, try to stay up to date on the M&A markets, LBO, equities, etc. Really this is a habit that only takes 20 min a day and something you can easily do when you wake up instead of beating your meat. I think having knowledge on what’s going on and having some sort of opinion as to why will be the best thing you can do for yourself.

*note: if you do happen to end up at a place that is notorious for not handing out many return offers, may be helpful to learn how to model but i would connect with previous SAs at your firm to figure out if that’s necessary now
