Scared to Start

Going to be starting a long stint at a firm. In my previous internship (different firm) I got treated like absolute shit and was gaslit, manipulated, reputationally damaged and dealt with some absolute insufferable people that were just downright unapologetic pieces of trash.

I am not concerned about the hours or the work, but I am really concerned to become depressed again by having to work with people who can make your life a misery. I'd appreciate if anyone has any advice with this type of anxiety of starting a new role or if this behaviour is just the way it is and I should just suck it up.

Thank you.

Go into it open minded, but have the bar at the floor. In the worst case scenario, remember that this is in fact just a job and you are not stuck or trapped anywhere.

Yeah sometimes you forget that it's just a job when you're whole social life and validation becomes work, important to have hobbies and activities outside for sure. thanks for the perspective

It could be worse if you were stick on an oil rig or something

but as long as you’re at a nice bank in IB you have like infinite exit options. So just take it one day at a time

establish yourself in a nice apartment in a city you enjoy. Then remind yourself this is just a launching pad to the world

btw the world is very cruel , even more so outside banks. So get used to having sharp elbows. Be very political. And don’t accept bullshit from anyone ever

right now I have a weekly 1:1 with the head of HR for my firm; because my boss isn’t behaving correctly

obviously you want to be helpful, malleable, open to coaching. But if anyone lies to you you call them on it right away. Early, often, always
