Should I transfer to Emory from UT-Austin McCombs
Hi everyone! I am now a freshman finance student at UT McCombs. I am non-BHP, regular BBA. I applied for transfer to Emory and just got accepted. I am planning to do IB, hopefully in healthcare or consumer retails, but not energy. I want to go to NYC.
Now I am considering if I should go, and will UT has a better shot at NY banks than Emory?
UT McCombs
Pros:
-I am in a selective finance org that places a lot of students in IB, but mostly in Houston energy banking.
-I will be having leadership positions in some orgs I am in now. (At least one and hopefully 2.)
-I will be having an off-cycle IB internship with a local investment bank in my sophomore fall.
-I am already familiar with the campus and had connections with a lot of upperclassmen doing IB.
-Great alumni network.
-A lot of banking info sessions (mostly Houston banks)
-Kind of comfort zone now after a year here.
Cons:
-Extremely competitive atmosphere to get into IBA and WSFM (all IB prep orgs). It is hard to get in IB without those orgs but not impossible.
-Highly focused on energy banking in Houston.
-Not much presence in NY, around 15 students go every year.
-Big business school, big class size, need to work hard to interact with professors.
-Not such a big name.
-I pay a lot of tuition as an out-of-state without Financial Aid.
-I don't really like Austin.
-School is too big (50k students)
-So many restrictions on core curriculum.
-No math minor. (I want to do some math. )
Emory Goizueta
Pros:
-Smaller beautiful campus
-Smaller class size
-Great presence in NY (38%)
-Private school (but not sure how prestigious it is)
-Great alumni network in NY
-Atlanta is an amazing city
-Allow me to do Econ/math major along with finance and explore other opportunities
-More likely to get financial aid (meet 95% needs)
-Students from all over the country (88% McCombs students are from TX)
Cons:
-Need to start over (no leadership position, no internship, new orgs, new people)
-No business school in sophomore year
-No structured IB prep orgs (at least from what I know. Can someone speak to Investment Banking Academy?)
-Lower business school rank
-Maybe less alumni network?
Thank you so much!!
Hey stressfulpique, the following topics might be helpful:
You're welcome.
This is super anecdotal so would take with a grain of salt. I had a friend who went to Emory and a lot of the banks that recruit there are also regional. He went to work for a bank in Florida.
I think you have the same chances to recruit for NY out of UT vs Emory. There is a big Longhorn network in NY. I went to UT / regular BBA and did IB Consumer & Retail in NY! Short answer being, I don't think UT forces you into Energy - you definitely have a shot at doing non-energy in NY. Also, you are a Freshman so you are early in the game and think you will have a very clear story crafted early on which will be helpful in your recruiting efforts.
PS - if you have a sec, I'd really appreciate you checking out my new blog here. It is based on my experience as a woman in the financial services industry.
Thanks!
Same chances in both school I would say (I think lol). I was in a similar position as you this spring semester, had an ivy transfer option, but i opted to stay in my non-target and do a boutique internship as it position me better for recruiting.
This was my sophomore spring semester so it was a bit different, but you should still take into consideration how not having an internship/leadership roles and losing alumni connections would affect your sophomore summer recrutiing. I would take Emory though, you can make new connections/find new internships, plus you will have a better college experience and save money.
Stick with UT Austin.
There’s an investment banking group at my school, which is extremely competitive, that seems to be the only way kids get relevant SA stints and FT offers. I didn’t get in. I was crushed when I received my rejection, especially because I crushed the interview and (literally) got every technical right, but I knew not to give up. I received an SA and FT offer from a very reputable bank, in the group I was aiming for, all through networking.
Keep a high gpa, your internships and school are better than mine, keep moving up in your finance and other student orgs, and network like a bat out of hell. You’ll make it for sure. There’s no need to throw away everything you’ve worked for at UT Austin, because switching to Emory really isn’t going to give you that much better exposure, and the cost/benefit is really bad here IMO.
Thanks so much for the reply! Do you think I can still reach out to UT alumni if I transfer to Emory? Aside from better placement in NY, I like Emory's college experience more and prefer a smaller campus. So if transferring to Emory isn't a disadvantage for me on IB recruiting, I tend to go. Thanks!
You can still reach out to UT Alumni, but i doubt they'll be as receptive since you transferred away from the school. They'll ask you why you left, and you can obviously spin the shit out of it, but you don't really have a "passing" answer as to why ("Better recruiting", "I don't like the campus/culture", etc.).
I get liking Emory better, but remember that college is a 40 year decision, not a 4 year decision. In terms of networking, you should be reaching out to everyone and anyone. Put alumni first, but don't be afraid to send cold emails to randoms as well.
I agree with the other commenter who said you already have high upside in your current standing. You'll have a full reset at Emory, and that can be difficult to overcome. You're at UT's student fund. What if you don't get into Emory's student fund? You'll face an entirely different set of academic expectations at Emory, which can be difficult to adjust to.
In NYC at BB, we recruit from both schools for ALL groups. I would not recommend transferring during the year of recruitment - this can lead to a lot of issues unless it's a clear cut nontarget to semi/target transition.
Thanks for the reply! Would you define transferring after freshman year as a year of recruitment? Based on my experience at UT-Austin, most of the networking and recruiting happens in sophomore year. For the off-cycle internship, I am not sure if I will be able to do one based on the heavier workload at Emory & lack of connections with local banks. Thanks!
Just graduated from Goizueta. Have some perspective on your interest in math/econ as well. feel free to pm me
I'd stay put. Lot of upside in your current position, but if you are really crazy about Emory then maybe it's for you.
Not really understanding your logic. You don't like Austin, but you think Atlanta is an awesome city. Well, I'm sure you thought Austin was awesome when you chose UT from out of state. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.
UT-Austin is a much more prestigious school than Emory, especially for banking. Every major bank has a presence in Houston. If you are at UT, you are in play for internships at the best firms in Houston, and also will have a shot at NYC firms as well. If you are in Emory, you probably will only have a select few NYC firms recruiting on campus.
I would say that it's borderline problematic and a bit odd that you are 19 years old and considering transferring schools for investment banking recruiting. Based on that fact alone, I'd guess you probably haven't given UT a fair shot, and I think recruiters will be perplexed by your story. As I said, the grass isn't always greener.
Thanks so much for the reply and really appreciate your input!
Just to answer your question about Austin vs. Atlanta, to be honest, I didn't get into any of my favorite schools while applying from high school, so I simply chose the school with the best business program. This choice has nothing to do with the city. I am not saying anything negative about Austin, but I just felt it's not really for me.
For banking, I am not denying that UT has great recruiting opportunities, especially in Houston. But I feel that I am not so into energy after spending a year in the energy group of my org. My decision about transferring isn't just for banking, or even not mostly for banking. It's mainly about the college experience, like campus size, school culture, private/public, and more flexibility about curriculum. Careers are definitely important, but I do like the college experience at Emory better. I enjoyed my freshman year at UT, and I know it's an awesome school, but maybe just not for me. So simply speaking, if going to Emory doesn't hurt with IB recruiting for NYC, I will tend to go. I definitely understand that Emory cannot be compared with UT's recruiting at Houston. The only reason I might give up Emory for UT is that UT has a much better recruiting for banking at NYC.
Would love to hear about your opinions! And thanks so much!
If you are in USIT, I'd stay since it's one of the best finace org in the nation imo. UT's network can take you to anywhere you want if you work hard, but I think it's not that difficult to rebuilt you network even if you really want to transfer.
Btw how's SA 2020 energy recruiting going for UT? I'm from another Texas school and would appreciate if you can share some info on that
I am not in USIT SCG, but just a general member. The finance org I am in is a student fund as well, but not as famous as USIT.
I attended some info sessions but not all of them. Most banks, both BB, middle market and boutiques came and brought bankers for networking. Some of them are also doing coffee chats. BBs like GS and JPM are pushing back their timeline, but some others like RBC and PWP are already recruiting and I know some sophomores have got offers. Just FYI, might not be so accurate since I didn't go through the process.
Thanks for letting me know. I was told that UT doesn't allowed recruiting until August. I'm from another Texas school and recruiting for us hasn't started
UT def has a better presence in my SA class than Emory. I’ve met no people from emory And have met many people UT Austin
Met a lot more UT people at networking events than Emory
Thanks for the reply! Just curious--are you working at a bank in Houston or NYC? Thanks!
NYC. Was actually talking to UT Austin kids and they said that for the first time this year, more kids went outside of Houston (SF and NYC) than to Houston.
.
People forget that naturally UT Austin will have more representation, they have over 4.5k students in their BBA program compared to Emory’s 1k students.
I could say many of the good things about Emory especially with EBs (target for Lazard,PWP, etc) but ultimately if you’re in UT Austin I see no reason to transfer to Emory
UT is more reputable in general. If you're in the street and tell someone you go to UT, they'll most likely hear of it. If you told someone you go to Emory, not many people would know about it outside of the south
this is just false lmao, most people have heard of both and see them as good southern schools, obviously not on the same level as Duke/Vandy but still
