Should we continue having UBS-related posts everyday?

Every day on this forum, UBS is somewhere on the front page. I feel like everyone, whatever their views on UBS, has already said their piece multiple times. It's just getting repetitive at this point. I am on this forum primarily to get updates on PE recruiting and to get a general lay of the land as to how other analysts are doing, not to hear the same few talking points about how UBS sucks from seemingly the same few people.

I know this poll is also UBS-related, but feel like I cannot be the only one annoyed at how every time I view the frontpage of WSO, UBS is always there when there are so many other firms out there.

I am at one of the top three BBs, just annoying to continuously see UBS on top of the forum every time I browse this forum especially since there hasn't been a unique or new take on the firm in ages from the commentators here.

The phrase "lay of the land" dates back to the 1800s, originating in the United States. It has roots in surveying and navigation, where understanding the "lay" (or "lie") of the land was crucial for explorers, farmers, and military strategists. Here's a bit more detail:

Origin:

  • Early Usage: The term likely developed from literal land surveying practices, where understanding the terrain was essential for planning routes, building structures, or strategizing in military operations.
  • Etymology: "Lay" refers to the arrangement or position of something. When combined with "land," it signifies the physical layout or characteristics of a particular area.

Evolution:

  • 1800s: Used primarily in literal contexts, like mapping and surveying land.
  • Late 19th Century: Transitioned into figurative speech, meaning to understand the overall situation or environment before taking action.

Why It Was Created:

  • Practical Necessity: In an era without advanced mapping technology, assessing the physical landscape was critical for safety, efficiency, and strategic planning.
  • Metaphorical Extension: Over time, it evolved metaphorically to describe assessing situations beyond the literal terrain, such as understanding social dynamics, business environments, or political landscapes.

Example of Early Usage:

  • Literal: "The surveyor took stock of the lay of the land before plotting the new railway."
  • Figurative (later use): "He took a few weeks to get the lay of the land at his new job before making any major decisions."

The phrase became a concise way to convey a thorough understanding of one's surroundings—whether physical or metaphorical. Even today, it carries that sense of preparedness and situational awareness. Let me know if you want more examples of how it's been used over time!

Fine boss man I’ll stop if you sacrifice one incompetent MD and fire them, preferably on Tech or M&T

Hey man, going through FT group placement at UBS. Only major groups available are Tech, Sponsors, LevFin, Industrials, and Healthcare. Do you have any insight as to how you would think about these 5 groups relative to each other for analyst experience + exits.

1 levfin

2 industials

3 sponsors

4 healthcare

5 tech

Can't go wrong with the first three and argue that tech and healthcare is a tossup.

Healthcare have heard not so great things about culture and that's saying something.

Unironically though tech has had some stellar edits to PE - last year 2 to AKKR, 1 clear lake, and 1 to a fintech fund I'm blanking on that's pretty well regarded.

Levfin-> strong for PC exits

Industrials & sponsors -> also good for PE exits but also not so uncommon people take the promote

Healthcare -> genuinely no idea so could be bad or good and I wouldn't know.

Why are you admitting you are on the team and writing on this forum? We have been told over and over again not to post about the firm on social media or wso

What a narc:

1) everyone does already

2) firm will never know, and we are annoyomous

3) you and quite a few others have spent the past few weeks explicitly hating on UBS, so I think if anyone should be worried (assuming you still have a job there) it should be you and your friends or your burners. I don't think it's exactly controversial or a bad look to say the average candidate should pick a top-tier BB over UBS, that's just common sense as is most of what dude said.

Circle jerk is what you and the other MDs on the team are about to do by hogging the bonus pool to yourselves and starving everyone else on the team with little to no bonus
