Simple Deferred Stock Q

If you work at a BB and are laid off let’s say as a VP, what happens to the unvested deferred stock that you have? Is it really forfeited? How can you stay at a place and build up so much of your NW in this deferred comp only to have it be at risk of being literally swiped to nothing if you get let go? I don’t see how MD’s can handle this
