It seems like you're gearing up for an exciting summer at SMBC in their New York office! Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for some banks to delay assigning sectors until closer to the internship start date. The December interview process for sector placement is likely designed to match your interests and skills with the needs of the teams.

To prepare for the sector interview, consider the following:

  1. Research Sectors: Familiarize yourself with the various coverage groups at SMBC. Understand the industries they focus on, recent deals, and trends in those sectors.

  2. Know Your Preferences: Be ready to articulate why you're interested in specific sectors. Highlight any relevant coursework, internships, or personal interests that align with those industries.

  3. Brush Up on Technicals: Even though it's a sector placement interview, you might still face technical questions to assess your readiness for the role.

  4. Network: If possible, connect with current or former SMBC interns or analysts to gain insights into the different groups and their cultures.

Good luck with your preparation and the upcoming interview!

Incoming 26 here. Our group placement was in early Feb. You won’t really hear much from them until midway through your junior year. Congrats tho!

It's really chill, don't sweat it at all. Talk to some people if you can beforehand, but honestly with the .edu firewall, you're not super likely to get responses (nor does it really matter). The placement day this year was basically a big zoom call where all the groups presented and then you got placed in short 1-1s with each team. Then you rank the teams. I think everyone got their first or second picks.

Not sure, you're going to have to ask people who are working there. Industrials has the biggest portfolio afaik but could depend. No travel/housing stipend. Not sure any banks do that.
