was told that smith barney is a small division under citigroup's corporate & investment banking group. after some checking i heard that it is actually citigroup's brokerage arm + investment research..
so what is citi's investment banking arm called ? im kinda lost.

Actually it is like this: CIB + Smith Barney splits into Global Banking, Global Markets and Global Transaction Services. And Investment Banking is one of the branches of Global Banking.
the website did say CIB splits into global banking, global markets and gts and investment banking falls under global banking.
but if you go one level up it will say private bank, Smith Barney and Citigroup investment research fall under PWM.

so if you wanna be an investment banker in Citi, do you tell the HR you wanna join Smith Barney or global banking's IBD?
im just confused cause i thought salomon Smith Barney was citi's IBD.
Just dug out a bunch of stuff I signed for them. Everywhere it says Citigroup Corporate and Investment Banking (I wasn't in Global Banking but one of the other 2). Tell them you want to join Global Banking if you don't want to end up being a broker. Smith Barney is their brokerage part.
Smith Barney is just the brokerage and research parts. As far as the corporate & investment bank goes, they're trying to eradicate any mention of Salomon altogether and emphasize the Citigroup brand more and more. The legal entity is called Citigroup Global Markets, Inc. As said above, investment banking is part of Global Banking, definitely not part of Smith Barney.

i heard about it. my question was whether Smith Barney equals IBD. kudos to sylvester & steady state for clearing that out.
The "Salomon" was the IB part (from Salomon Brothers)...Smith Barney by itself is just brokerage.
