Sophomore summer internships?

When should we start thinking about landing something for sophomore summer? I’m CO 2029 and very confused because it seems like everything is open to older students, yet the timelines are moving forward so much and banks want to see something lined up. Any advice?

If you're aiming for a sophomore summer internship, here's what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Start Networking Early: Begin building connections now. Networking is crucial, especially for sophomore internships, as many opportunities are not formally advertised. Aim to have strong relationships with professionals by mid-fall. This will help you apply "warm" for diversity externships or internships.

  2. Focus on Local and Smaller Firms: Sophomore internships at major firms (BBs/EBs) are highly competitive and often reserved for top students or diversity candidates. Instead, target smaller, local firms or boutiques. These are more accessible and still provide valuable experience.

  3. Recruiting Timelines:

    • Most sophomore internships start recruiting in February-April of your sophomore spring.
    • For junior year internships, some big firms like Citi begin recruiting over a year in advance. You can start looking for summer 2025 roles as early as December 2024.
  4. Diversity Programs: If applicable, explore diversity-focused programs like:

    • Morgan Stanley's Sophomore Rotational Program.
    • JPMorgan's Launching Leaders.
    • Credit Suisse's Doug Paul Program (may have been renamed).
    • Barclays' Generation Next.
  5. Importance of Sophomore Internships: While not as critical as junior year internships, having a sophomore internship can strengthen your profile for junior recruiting. It shows initiative and provides a foundation for future roles.

  6. Backup Plan: If you don’t secure a sophomore internship, don’t panic. Focus on networking and skill-building to position yourself strongly for junior year recruiting.

Start networking and researching opportunities now to stay ahead of the game!
