Southerners in IB?

I was talking about this on the phone with an analyst from my school on Thursday and it made me think about how many people from the south actually get into investment banking in New York as compared to Atlanta, Charlotte, or Texas. Are you looked at pretty much like everyone else or is it a somewhat rare event to see someone from somewhere like Alabama or Mississippi? Is IB in NY just a lot of Northeastern kids?

There's a fair amount of UVA kids as well as a semi-strong pipeline from my school (in-state alums as well). Still, they're the minority, but they're there.

I am from the South and working at a BB in NYC. It isn't very common to meet people from the South, but I know a few.

I smoothed over the accent when in college (attended a target outside the region) so it isn't readily apparent where I'm from. There are all sorts of people in IB, so I don't think you'll stand out unless you want to.

For anyone coming from the South to NYC IB, it helps to go in assuming that those around you may not share a similar outlook on faith, family, or politics. Coming from community with fairly homogeneous views it can be easy to feel safe casually talking about these things, but in NYC, people usually think differently. Maybe don't share that you used to celebrate Robert E. Lee's birthday (lmao).
