Success stories on climbing the corporate ladder?

A senior folk at my firm who has helped me quite a bit during recruitment is suspected to be let go, and I was really shocked. I know for sure that his performance / ability to bring deals is no worse than others so if anything it must be office politics.

I'm not determined to be a career banker but I would like to make associate and above so if anyone has tips on how to deal with office politics / climb up the corporate ladder I'm all ears. I want to be prepared especially in such volatile time.

After being in the industry for many years, I've noticed that people with some social EQ will have the understanding to know what it takes to survive, but choose not to.

Let me give you an example. I worked under a boss that took credit for all the work, deflected blame to everyone, and loved the sound of his voice. Additionally, they liked to pretend everything was going great with their team, and any complaints or concerns that were brought to him was seen in a negative light. In order to thrive under his rule, the best policy was to keep your mouth closed, and be a yes man. Some senior people have adapted and have become yes men. Others have stated i dont give a fuck, and will express their opinions no matter the consequences.

In my specific scenario, it's pretty clear who will be the ones to most likely climb the ladder one step higher. However, sometimes this is not worth it, especially in an environment like IB where at the senior level it's a sales job, and if you have a good number of clients, you can tell people to fuck off and go someplace else.

You have to choose your values, either job security or happiness.
