Rising Senior Summer 2024 Internship
I am a junior at NYU Stern and still have not found a summer internship for 2024. My cumulative gpa is a 2.7 and my core gpa is 3.5. My goal is to find an IB internship but most have already completed their interview process. Is anyone aware of firms or banks that are still hiring? Considering my gpa I am open to MM or boutiques as well. Or do you recommend I do a 1 year masters degree and then apply to be an analyst.
Considering your GPA, you should be open to stuff outside of banking as well. Also, nobody is going to hire an associate out of a 1-year masters program.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's not uncommon for students to find themselves in a tight spot when it comes to securing internships, especially in the competitive field of investment banking. Here are some actionable steps you can take:
Leverage Your Network: Reach out to alumni from NYU Stern, professors, and any professional contacts you have. Networking is key in finance, and sometimes opportunities come from unexpected places.
Target Middle Market (MM) and Boutique Firms: Given that most bulge bracket banks may have finished their recruiting process, MM and boutique firms often have more flexible timelines. Make a list of such firms and reach out to them directly.
Consider Other Relevant Internships: Look for internships in related fields such as asset management, equity research, or financial advisory services. These can also provide valuable experience and a potential pathway into investment banking later on.
Academic Performance: While your cumulative GPA is a bit low for traditional IB roles, your core GPA is strong. Highlight your core GPA and any relevant coursework or projects in your applications and interviews.
Master's Degree Option: Pursuing a one-year master's degree could be a strategic move to bolster your academic credentials and give you another recruiting cycle to break into IB. However, this should be weighed against the additional time and financial investment required.
WSO Resources: Utilize resources like the WSO Networking Guide to refine your networking strategy and the WSO Investment Banking Prep Pack for any upcoming interviews.
Remember, persistence is key, and with a proactive approach, you can increase your chances of landing a summer internship. Keep an eye on the WSO job board as well, as new opportunities can pop up at any time.

Currently a junior at a non-target also without an internship, but have a significantly better GPA. I would expand your horizon.
