What is the difference between putting 'Summer Analyst' (or IB Summer Analyst) on your resume vs. putting 'Intern'? I don't want to get in trouble for exaggerating, so I was wondering if there was any technical difference. Thanks, and apologies if this seems like a silly question.

Intern is for part-time ~ 40-60 hour work week (mostly sophomores), not as structured summer program/formal interview process, pay is hourly ($9-15 per hour)
Analyst - formal interview process, structured training, relocation bonus, perks (black car, comped dinners), $70k prorated, 80-100 hour work weeks (mostly juniors)
at least this is how it is at my MM bank (think Jefferies, William Blair, Houlihan)

Summer Analysts are interns, most people just put Summer Analysts on their resumes to sound more professional... I don't think anyone is going to call you out on it unless all you did was bring coffee and buy lunch 24/7.
If you do any sort of legitimate work (do you use excel or the coffee machine) you can put analyst.

Doesn't matter. Everyone writes summer analyst anyways, so it's understood you mean a summer intern. Should probably check with the boutique though; some firms get pissy if you call it a summer analyst stint when they didn't write it on your offer letter. Put your group on your resume.

Do you consider yourself not apart of the analyst program becasue you are in a regional branch? Generally you can be both an intern and a summer analyst. Saying you went through a formal summer analyst training program might be the stretch.
I have not went through any summer analyst training program. I would liken my role somewhat to a ML global wealth management intern. My internship is not particularly structured or formal as I'm just a soph who got the gig through a connection and a basic interview. Thoughts?

Just noticed the current poll and it got me thinking, what separates a paid intern from a Summer Analyst? Is it the amount of hours per week? The structuredness of the program? I think that unless your offer letter has the words "Summer" and "Analyst" on it, you should play it safe and write "Summer Intern" on your resume. No one likes hyperbole.
As long as you're in some kind of front office/analyst time role at a bank/hf/pe shop then you should be allowed to put it.
However, there are people at my school who put summer analyst when they work in HR. For instance, this guy works in IB campus recruiting and has summer analyst on his linkedin and facebook.
I've also seen Human resources business partner summer analyst And Sales and Trading Campus Recruitment Summer Analyst
Now, those are bull shit because you aren't analyzing anything. I think that is basically lying.
It's simple. If the full-time, entry level employees are called "analysts," then you can put "summer analyst." For ER, "summer associate."

I would argue 'Summer Analyst' is fine to use. 'Clever Name' has a good way to look at it but I put SA for all three of my internships back in college (one boutique PE, one BB MO prop-trading and one FO IB). I never received a negative comment on it.
If you did a 10-week program and did real work, I would say SA is fine.
