Survived Probation - Easy Win
Just wanted to share a quick update—just passed my 3-month probation as an ECM analyst at a top bank (think DB/RBC/BMO). Not that I was worried, but it’s always good to have it behind me.
Heard through the grapevine that my comp’s already better than some of the M&A guys. Guess the real money’s not just in M&A—ECM’s where the action’s at. And the best part? I’m not chained to my desk until midnight like those guys. Work-life balance for the win.
Looking forward to seeing where this year takes me. Maybe I’ll teach the M&A crew how to handle the pressure with style. 😉
Cheers, Your Friendly Neighborhood ECM Analyst
Based on the highest ranked content on WSO, here's what you need to know about ECM (Equity Capital Markets) roles and their exit opportunities:
Work Hours and Compensation: ECM analysts often work around 60 hours a week and can make up to $140k annually or more as a first-year analyst. This is considered a good work-life balance compared to other product groups like M&A, where analysts might work longer hours.
Perception and Value: While ECM roles might not have the same private equity (PE) exit opportunities as other groups, they still offer substantial compensation and interesting work. The value and treatment of ECM analysts can vary significantly depending on the bank:
Exit Opportunities: While ECM might not lead directly to PE exits, the role still offers valuable experience and a solid career path within the finance industry.
In summary, ECM roles provide a balanced work-life scenario with competitive compensation, and the perception of ECM can vary widely depending on the bank's structure and revenue sources.
One of these (the EBBB) doesn’t fit the list and you thought we wouldn’t notice. Congrats at BMO!
Are we supposed to congratulate you for passing your probation period…?!
