Taking summer class during SA stint/ question for virtual interns

Hi everyone,

This past Fall semester was rough on me as I had a tough time getting into the grove of things which led to me dropping a class and only taking three. While all that was going on, I was able to recruit at a BB this upcoming summer. I'm running behind on my schedule so I was curious:

1) How demanding was your virtual internship? I read both sides of spectrums where interns were getting slammed with work and others were spending most of their time on Netflix.

2) The class is going to be for four weeks. Do you think it is doable?

Thanks!

I did a virtual class while also doing a virtual BB SA internship. The first half of my internship wasn’t bad at all, maybe 60 hours per week max. The second half, however, was very intense and was more like 90-100 hours per week. For my class, I honesty had to just work on it at like 2 or 3am or on Saturday. Luckily, my class didn’t have a set schedule, which luckily meant I could do it whenever I had the time. Would not recommend it again, especially if its going to be an even remotely difficult class.

Yikes.. good on you for trooping through it. I'm pretty sure the classes for my school have a set schedule so I'd have to show up to class on Zoom which would be horrible if I were to get called at any point from an analyst. I appreciate the insight!

I wouldn't do it. Last summer, I pulled around 70 hours most weeks. I had another project through a club at school I had to go to Zoom meetings for once a week for an hour after work, and it was rough to say the least. People would have to repeat things to me because I was mentally off, and it was so bad my friends would laugh.

I didn't have to put in a lot of Zoom time, but just being on the phone a lot and having to stare at the screen for 12-15 hours per day with no break is exhausting. Also, there's a lot of subconscious stress that gets really tiring around figuring out what to do because you literally can't see any of your bosses. You always have things to do, but it can be hard to figuring about what you "should" be doing asap, and what should wait until everyone is logged off for the day and you can concentrate to deliver for the next day. Most of the other interns at my bank across divisions were working a lot, and def more than they would've been in person.

Also, let's say you have class from 1-3pm two days per week. If your boss emails you at 1:45 and asks to call them at 2, there's absolutely no way out of that one. Or, you might have mandatory intern-wide programming, let's say at 1:45pm every Tuesday, there's no way you make both work. Imo, not worth the risk of getting double booked.

Let's even say you have a magical world where the class is asynchronous and you can do it all on the weekends--in my opinion still not worth it. You need time to recover and get ready for the next week. Especially if the programs this summer will be as shortened as they were this past summer--you really don't have any room to make mistakes and make up for it with the length of the program. If you pull an all nighter

Yeah I might avoid that and just stack up my senior year even though I really wanted to take all my easy classes then. But that's what I was most afraid of- getting called for a meeting flat in the middle of class. I won't risk it and just work myself next fall lmao.
