Career Resources
Based on the most helpful WSO content:
Lifestyle and Work Hours: Municipal finance (public finance) offers a better lifestyle compared to other investment banking roles. You can expect to work around 55-65 hours a week, which is less intense than many other IB roles. Clients in this sector tend to be more pleasant and less demanding, with fewer urgent turnaround requirements.
Compensation: While the base salary is comparable to other IB roles, the bonus is typically about two-thirds of what you might expect in other investment banking positions.
Exit Opportunities: Public finance is often seen as having fewer exit opportunities compared to other areas of investment banking. However, many professionals in this field are not looking to leave due to the favorable work-life balance.
Skill Set and Mobility: Public finance can encompass a variety of roles, including investment banking, sales and trading, credit analysis, derivatives, and other capital market structures. This diversity can provide a broad skill set that is valuable in other areas of finance.
Perception and Career Path: There is a perception that public finance can pigeonhole professionals into municipal finance roles. However, it is possible to transition into traditional investment banking or even private equity, especially if you have experience in related areas like healthcare public finance, which deals with hospital underwriting and mergers.
Geographical Flexibility: Public finance roles are more amenable to being located outside of major financial hubs like New York City, which can be a plus for those looking for geographical flexibility as they advance in their careers.
In summary, while municipal finance is somewhat niche, it offers a viable path into investment banking with a favorable lifestyle and decent compensation. The skills gained can be transferable, and there are opportunities for lateral moves within large firms. However, the exit opportunities may be more limited compared to other IB roles.

Bump
Having interviewed and interacted with a few pub fin bankers (MM shops), there is very little that is relatable between that work and what you do with private sector businesses, particularly as it relates to M&A. I've found applicants' modeling skills to be decent, but writing/drafting and PPT to be subpar vs. what you see in industry coverage. There's also a big learning curve as it relates to understanding what drives value for a sell side M&A asset.
