Thoughts on renting furnitures?
Anyone have experience renting furnitures? I am in a rotational program so will be moving every 6 months. I did a bit of budgeting, and even the most fundamental things like bed, mattress, desk, chair come out to something like $1k if I buy them. Then I will have to incur $1k+ on moving expenses (although I do get a moving expense stipend of $2k). So I was thinking about renting furnitures instead. Anyone have any experience in similar situation?
can you even rent furniture?
If you rent only the essentials, such as a couch, bed, nightstands, dresser, table, media console, and TV you are looking at about $400-500 per month depending on the style of furniture. Assuming you move twice a year, you would only be out of pocket $800-2000 renting after one year. If you purchased the furniture you would actually a $1,000 gain after one year.
Rental: $400-500 monthly cost X 12 months= ($4,800-6,000) $2,000 moving stipend X 2 moves= $4,000 Net Cost= $800-2,000
Purchase: $1,000 purchase price= ($1,000) $1,000 moving expense X 2 moves= ($2,000) $2,000 moving stipend X 2 moves= $4,000 Net Gain= $1,000
I would purchase so you can actually get something you like and own it after your rotational stint is over.
My last 2-3 years of college and first year and half of work. I rented all my furniture or only lived executive fully furnished places. Till you know where you want to end up and settle down it's a pain to start collecting material tihngs.
Moving a bunch of shit is a real pain. See what deals you can find for fully furnished places.
..
1,000.00 for a bed, matress, desk and chair? I didn't know dollar tree sells furniture.
having a hard time figuring out about this sarcasm. Are you trying to say $1k is too much for them or too low?
Bed bugs are almost impossible to get out of furniture. That's why I chose to decorate my apartment exclusively with repossessed stainless steel and glassware.
If you aren't too concerned about what the furniture looks like, just buy some really cheap stuff from Craigslist wherever you end up first. The exception here is the mattress, buy a good mattress and then use the stipend to move the stuff. In the long run you will save money and it will be one less hassle you have to deal with when finding a new place. Also, as mentioned above, focus on only the essentials so you don't have a ton of stuff to move or deal with when you move on to the next job/career/step in your life.
Also, is that stipend given every time you move, or just initially?
Regards
where are you living. For 6 months you could look into corporate furnished apartments. See if the company will let you apply your moving stipends toward the rent.
I haven't rented furniture yet and it seems to me quite a reasonable decision in your situation. But I’d be more likely to look for a furnished apartment.
Renting is not a good idea, better to purchase and then sell when you dont require.
