For MedTech-focused investment banking groups, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

Top Investment Banks with Strong MedTech Groups

  1. Guggenheim: Known for a solid MedTech franchise. They’ve been involved in blockbuster transactions like Arena/Pfizer, GW/Jazz, and Myocardia/BMS. However, there’s reportedly higher junior turnover in this group.
  2. Morgan Stanley: While not exclusively MedTech, Morgan Stanley has a strong healthcare services presence and is considered a quality player in the healthcare space.
  3. Jefferies: Their healthcare group, including biotech and MedTech, is one of their strongest. They handle a significant volume of healthcare services M&A deals and have a robust ECM practice, including biotech IPOs.
  4. Barclays: Performs well in healthcare services and is arguably the best BB in Healthcare IT, which overlaps with MedTech.
  5. Evercore: A strong boutique player in healthcare, including MedTech, with good deal flow and exits.

Culture and Deal Flow

  • Guggenheim: Strong deal flow but higher junior turnover.
  • Jefferies: Known for being a sweatshop with intense hours, but juniors are described as “fratty and chill.” Strong deal flow and excellent exits to PE/VC.
  • Barclays: Solid ECM deal flow and exposure, with a rebuilding services team.

Top MedTech PE/GE/VC Funds

  • Atlas Venture
  • Third Rock Ventures
  • 5AM Ventures
  • Flagship Pioneering
  • Orbimed
  • Versant Ventures
  • ARCH Venture Partners

These funds are leaders in early-stage biotech and MedTech investments, often focusing on Series A deals. For later-stage investments, funds like Sofinnova, Longitude, and Clarus are notable, though they increasingly favor candidates with PhDs.

If you’re looking to break into MedTech-focused banking or investing, targeting these groups and funds would be a strong move!

Not in healthcare but often see gugg on a lot of med tech mandates

Unsure why you’d want to cover medtech specifically, but it’s definitely PWP. They have the top medtech banker out there (Philippe McAuliffe) who is a consistent rainmaker for the firm (shockwave, penumbra, etc).

Otherwise their HC group is mid tier at best so would really consider it only if you wanted to do medtech specifically. Otherwise just go to a JPM/GS/CVP type place
