Transfer to Wharton from UChicago?
First post here...so guys please be gentle...
Long story short: I'm going to UChicago this fall, and am wondering about a few things.
1) How good is UChicago as a "target"? How is it ranked compared to the ivies?
2) I didn't apply to Wharton/Penn after getting into UChicago EA, and realized that it was a big mistake after taking an internship in finance/reading WSO (this was a few months ago during spring break) and realized how good Wharton is at placing people in the industry. What are my chances to transfer to Wharton, assuming that I have a 3.8+ college GPA, 2350 SAT, solid high school record?
Just an opinion.
I think UChicago is a great school. But I believe it's OCR is just a step behind the Ivies. It sounds like financial aid is a non-issue since it's not like you're going from flagship state school to private school. So money is a non-factor.
If you got into Wharton by transfer, I would jump ship in a second.
U Chicago isn't a state school...
i know. I said it's not like he's going from a state school to a private school. he's going from private school to private school--so there won't be much tuition differential. hence...money is a non-factor
Person didnt say UC was a state school. He said transferring from UC to Wharton isnt like going from public to wharton in terms of money.
yes, money is a non-factor.
any ideas as to how difficult it is to transfer to wharton?
I don't know offhand. I'm sure it's extremely difficult. They might publish transfer stats on the Penn/Wharton site. There are a bunch of Wharton grads/students on here that would be more helpful.
and is it advantageous to transfer from another top school such as chicago?
You'll be fine with a 3.8+ gpa from Chicago. Just make sure to get relevant work experience. I don't think the incremental difference between the two schools is worth the hassle of the transfer. An econ degree from Chicago is highly respected.
Wow, first person I've seen who actually uses their own photo. Seriously?
and that guy tried to half crop and left a remnant of a female face in the party, what a loser.
Good Luck getting a 3.8 from UC -- props if you can. Wharton prob does have a better OCR, but you also have to consider a handicap given the competition. Most kids who go to Wharton want to be bankers or consultants while that is not true to the same degree at UChicago. Even then, it's not like UC isn't sending plenty of kids to BBs or MMB. Plus transferring will put you at a slight disadvantage with crucial social connections. Just things to think about.
My advice: a high GPA at UC w/ a major in Econ/Math/stats etc... puts you in a pretty good spot. Just enjoy your first year!
UChicago is definitely a target. I attended a few IB get togethers for them.
you guys are prob right. 3.8 U of C will get you most anywhere. I'm just under the impression that Wharton has access to certain OCR opportunities that really aren't available anywhere except for Harvard. especially on the buy-side out of undergrad.
i guess given the competition for those spots, they're unlikely anyway and probably not worth the hassle of transferring.
I'd say UChicago is right about on par for IBD at the BB's with everywhere that's not HYP, Wharton, or even Dartmouth maybe.
The most important question you should be asking yourself: Do I like the school I'm attending?
If not, then try to transfer to a place where you might be happier. If so, then stay there. Chicago is good enough a school that this is what your decision should come down to.
Thanks guys for all the advice. I of course haven't studied at UChicago yet, but my gut feeling is that I will enjoy it there -- which is why I applied early and decided not to apply to Penn after I got in in the first place. I guess I will see how everything goes, and if I still want to transfer after 2, 3 months, I will apply for transfer.
Any more advice is appreciated!
based on what I read, the notion that Chicago has grade deflation is out-dated. although the school doesn't have grade inflation as some of the ivies do, the average gpa nowadays at chicago is in the 3.4-3.5 range, or so I've been told.
Yeah, I think UChicago's avg gpa is about the same as Columbia, Dartmouth, Penn, and a bit higher than Cornell and Princeton. Harvard, Yale, and Browh, though, are notorious for super inflation.
I believe this is accurate. UChicago average GPA as of 2006 is 3.35. Probably around 3.4 now. That said, if you study a harder topic, I imagine the average GPA is more like 3.2
Life is full if surprises, SirTradesaLot.
It won't matter. Recruiting will be similar at both Wharton and U Chicago, despite what the trolls here say.
I see no trolls in this thread.

While I'd love to believe that's true, I'm not really convinced at all..
bump....
You'll do fine with recruiting if you do the right things. Also, there's reason to believe that there might be a little more recruiting by the time you're a junior at UChicago. UChicago didn't become a "sexy" school like the Ivies/MIT/Stanford until maybe 2-3 years ago.
Hahaha, good luck getting a 3.8 at UChi.
anyone else wanna chime in?
