Uchicago Business Econ vs Econ

I saw in an older post that apparently someone’s firm was automatically adjusting GPA down for business Econ majors compared to Econ majors? What do you guys think - is this actually a mainstream thing? All in all, would you say business Econ or traditional Econ for finance recruiting opps?

Thanks

Ah, the age-old debate between business econ and traditional econ majors – a classic on the WSO forums! Here's the scoop based on the highest ranked content on WSO:

  • Difficulty and Perception: Traditional econ majors often take more advanced math courses, which can be seen as more rigorous by some firms. This might be why some firms adjust GPAs for business econ majors, as traditional econ is perceived to be more challenging due to the higher level of quantitative coursework.

  • Coursework Relevance: Business econ majors might have coursework that is more directly applicable to finance, such as financial accounting or corporate finance. This can be a plus when it comes to understanding the nuts and bolts of finance during recruiting.

  • Recruiting: When it comes to finance recruiting opportunities, both majors can be effective. It really depends on how you leverage your coursework, extracurriculars, and networking. Neither major will automatically put you at a disadvantage.

  • Flexibility: Traditional econ majors might have more flexibility to take a variety of classes, including higher-level math and econ courses, which can be beneficial for certain analytical roles in finance.

In the end, it's not just about your major but also about how you perform academically, your understanding of finance, and how well you network. Whether you choose business econ or traditional econ, make sure to excel in your classes, seek out relevant internships, and network like a pro. That's the real banana in the high finance diet!
