US ER Associate Interview Prep - HC / Life Sciences Sector

Folks,

Hopes everyone is taking some time off and enjoying the new year celebration. For those who sucessfully pivoted from M&A to ER, specifically to a BB ER Healthcare / Life Sciences Team in the US, can you please what your interview process was like?

What were some of the questions that you did not anticipate during your preparation? If there was a technical or case study, what did you do to best prepare for yourself?

I am going through the process and would love to pick your brain to prepare myself. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from M&A to Equity Research (ER), particularly in a specialized sector like Healthcare/Life Sciences, often involves a unique interview process. Here are some insights:

  1. Interview Process:

    • Behavioral Questions: Expect questions about your motivation for transitioning from M&A to ER, your interest in the healthcare/life sciences sector, and your ability to analyze and communicate complex information effectively.
    • Technical Questions: These may include valuation techniques, financial modeling, and understanding of healthcare-specific metrics (e.g., drug pipelines, FDA approval processes, etc.).
    • Case Studies: You might be asked to analyze a healthcare company, assess its competitive positioning, or evaluate the impact of a regulatory change on its valuation.
  2. Unanticipated Questions:

    • Questions about specific healthcare trends or recent developments in the life sciences sector.
    • Probing your understanding of the science behind products or technologies (e.g., mechanisms of action for a drug).
    • Questions about how you would approach building a model for a biotech company with no revenue.
  3. Preparation Tips:

    • Sector Knowledge: Deep dive into the healthcare/life sciences industry. Understand key players, recent M&A activity, and regulatory landscapes.
    • Technical Prep: Brush up on financial modeling, especially for companies with unique revenue structures like biotech firms.
    • Case Study Practice: Practice analyzing companies in the sector, focusing on their financials, competitive positioning, and growth drivers.
    • Communication Skills: ER roles require the ability to synthesize complex information and present it clearly. Practice explaining technical concepts in simple terms.
  4. Additional Resources:

    • Review recent equity research reports in the healthcare/life sciences sector to understand the style and depth of analysis.
    • Stay updated on industry news and trends to demonstrate your genuine interest and knowledge during interviews.

Good luck with your preparation! If you need more specific advice or examples, feel free to ask.
