US Sophomore Summer Recruiting as a Canadian

Hey everyone, to give some context im a incoming sophomore student at a Canadian target (Ivey/Queen's, yes ik this doesn't mean much for the states) currently interning at a Canadian big 5 within capital markets and really interested in interning at a PE firm in the states for my sophomore summer to learn as much as possible and give me a strong experience to hopefully leverage for NYC/SF EB/BB SA for junior summer. I've heard and seen some firms sponsor and/or hire Canadian students for sophomore summer like silver lake, advent, Charlesbank, etc. Would appreciate any info on what firms sponsor, which ones to target and overall timelines. Any other info would be much appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know about US sophomore summer recruiting as a Canadian:

  1. Firms That Sponsor or Hire Canadian Students:

    • Some US-based private equity firms, such as Silver Lake, Advent, and Charlesbank, have been known to sponsor or hire Canadian students for sophomore summer internships. However, these opportunities are highly competitive and often require strong networking and a standout application.
  2. Targeting Firms:

    • Focus on elite boutiques (EBs) and bulge brackets (BBs) in NYC or SF for junior summer roles, as these are the most common pipelines into US PE.
    • For sophomore summer, consider networking with regional/industry-specific boutiques or smaller PE firms that may be more open to hiring international candidates.
  3. Timelines:

    • Recruiting timelines for sophomore summer roles can vary, but many firms begin their processes early. Start networking and applying as soon as possible to maximize your chances.
    • Use the sophomore summer internship as a stepping stone to build experience and connections for junior summer recruiting.
  4. Networking:

    • Leverage your current internship at a Canadian Big 5 bank to connect with professionals in the US. Networking is crucial, especially since Canadian students may face additional challenges in gaining visibility with US recruiters.
    • Follow the WSO Networking Guide to structure your outreach and maintain consistent follow-ups with your contacts.
  5. Challenges:

    • Analysts at Canadian banks often struggle to place into US PE due to limited visibility and perceptions about Canadian banks. To overcome this, focus on building a strong resume, gaining relevant experience, and networking aggressively.
  6. Additional Resources:

    • Consider WSO’s Private Equity Interview Bootcamp or PE Master Package to prepare for technical and behavioral interviews.
    • If you’re unable to secure a PE role, explore internships in related fields like investment banking or consulting, which can also provide valuable experience.

Good luck with your recruiting journey! Remember, persistence and preparation are key.
