I was wondering if anyone out there had an excel template to value a company. I am a big fan of value investing and would like to start learning how its done and how to read the numbers and understand them. It would be huge help if their were step by step directions and explanations of what the numbers mean.
I hear so much about how important it is to be able to do financial modeling / valuation in this industry and I want to get a jump start by valuing some companies I have an eye on. If anyone has some sort of template that I can plug numbers and let the formulas do the work, that would be really great and a huge help.

Check that website out. He does an excellent job of explaining, and you can build your own template concurrently (which will help you learn it a lot better than using a borrowed template)

You can audit his 2 classes online (for free) - Corporate Finance and Valuation.
The site is a bit difficult to navigate at first because of all it has to offer.
How about a template to see if a stock is a buy/hold/sell? Does anyone have this out there? or if the above websites would give me this answer, would anyone be willing to elaborate on how this can be done.
You obviously don't need a template; you need to pick up a book and read how to value a company...
If you're able to find a template for what you describe above, be very skeptical.
How about valuing a start-up. Early stage company, so after friends and family money when they start looking for outside investors, with investing anywhere from 20k-200k. Would anyone know how to value companies that are not far along and still at very high growth (and risk).

I am interviewing for a buy side emerging market Equity Research position, and was asked to take home a "stock pitch" exam: do the valuation modeling and 1 page pitch note of an internet company.
My background is not in equity research, but management consulting. I am comfortable with excel modeling and financial statements. However, never done stock valuation and pitch note before, I would appreciate it very much if any of you more experienced on this topic can share me some examples / templates.
I searched the forums and similar questions have been asked and answered before. But examples and templates were all shared offline through PM.
