Very much overwhelmed
So I am feeling a little overwhelmed regarding interviews. I am currently ending my sophomore year and I am starting to apply for 2019 SA positions. I will be submitting my application to Wells for their IBD internship soon. The problem is that I hardly know anything about the technical questions. The recruiter told me that phone interviews will begin after June 18th and superday in August. I haven't even had a finance class yet. Just one intro to accounting. I bought BIWS to help with modeling and learning things conceptually and I just bought the WSO interview guide as well. I'm really worried about interviews assuming I even get past the resume screening. Does anyone have any advice? I really don't want to miss the recruiting cycle which I know I am even a little late starting. BTW I come from a very non-target school in NC.
Well - first of all - make sure that you are networking well because that's what's gonna help you get interviews if you are coming from a very non-target school. You need to make sure you are on their radar or just dropping an application won't help.
When it comes to prep - I recommend focusing on the WSO and BIWS guide sections that focus on accounting. Don't worry about learning how to model right now - they aren't gonna ask that in an interview. They are going to ask valuation and accounting questions. Like what does a $10 increase in depreciation do to the three financial statements and what are the components of enterprise value.

The difficulty of technical questions is way overstated. Given you have the BIWS and the WSO technical guides and two full months before first round interviews start, you should have no problem being prepared if you are truly dedicated to landing the job. I personally know people who come from non-finance backgrounds (i.e. engineering/liberal arts) who went from zero finance knowledge this February -> having 2019 SA offers already. Part of proving your ability to work in this field is being able to adapt/work quickly and diligently. Not having enough time to prepare for interviews is not a good excuse and you shouldn't even be letting that idea enter your mind. Commit to grinding down your technicals and networking and remember that you do not deserve anything, you are going to have to earn this one. Make it your #1 priority for the next few months and you will end up with an offer in your hands. Best of luck
