How are people finding housing for the summer. there are a lot of scam websites online so I am pretty lost.

Try FIT and NYU summer housing. Both have university housing that they rent to summer interns.
Try furnished finders. It’s made for travel nurses but you don’t have to be one to use it. I’ve used it once and had no problem.
I also know guys last summer who did Airbnb so maybe that’ll help
Join the FB groups - NYU groups, Sweats and the City Apartments etc. The university housing is easiest but I think you're past the deadline for most
Airbnb is an option but the hosts can cancel with no penalty right up until the day you start. One or two groups get totally Fed over every year
pretty sure there's still housing available at the New School 301 residence hall. sorta expensive but there's washer/dryer as well as a gym in the building so it honestly isnt that bad. I booked 22nd or 23rd floor so expecting a nice view too.
