West Coast Public Finance, SBs for best answers

I'm currently a summer analyst at a well known west coast boutique invesment bank working in their public finance department underwriting muni's. There looks to be no job offer on the horizon here and I was wondering what banks do you think I should reach out to for fall full time recruiting on the west coast? I am also curious what other areas of IB I could apply for given my experience (restructuring?) and what banks are the regional leaders for those sepcific areas.

Thanks for your help!

stone & youngberg in SF is pretty well known in the muni-bond space. when i used to work at a tiny muni-bond advisory shop in LA they were often the underwriters on the deals.

other areas of IB that may value your experience are desks that underwrite the swaps and other derivatives for municipalities.

another option is to work at an advisory shop like i did (this wont be as well paid as an IB underwriting gig, but will have better hours). some names in LA that come to mind are Gardner Underwood, the BLX Group, and Fieldman Rolapp & Associates.

For Pub Fi on West Coast, some boutiques are Samuel Ramirez & Co, EJ De la Rosa and Wedbush. Other big players in Pub Fi will have West Coast branches: Stone & Youngberg as mentioned above, Morgan Keegan, Robert Baird and Siebert, Brandford & Shank.

Since Pub Fi is so regional, you're probably going to find the BBs running Pub Fi divisions in their West Coast branches as well.

To the best of my knowledge, Pub Fi skills are the least transferrable to other areas of pure banking. If you're only doing SA, I would use the "I didn't like Pub Fi" strategy during FT recruiting. The exit ops and money aren't as good in Pub Fi as other types of banking. There are a ton of M&A boutiques in SF and LA, just search the regional boutiques thread or the Wall Street Mentors contact info list.
