WF Internal Lateral after SA internship

Has anyone had experience internally lateraling to a different group within WF after their time as a Summer Analyst? Best way to go about it?

Heading into a pretty niche group for the 2025 summer and worried about exit potential. Any advice appreciated.

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights and advice on internally lateraling to a different group within Wells Fargo (WF) after a Summer Analyst (SA) internship:

  1. Options for Moving:

    • Move to a Better Group within Wells Fargo: This is a common route if you are proactive about it. Networking within the firm and expressing your interest in other groups can be beneficial.
    • Lateral to a Different Bank: If internal mobility doesn't work out, consider lateraling to another bank after your internship.
    • Switch Industries: Some choose to move to an entirely different industry if they find their current group doesn't align with their long-term goals.
  2. Process and Timeline:

    • Networking: Start networking with the groups you are interested in as early as possible. Building relationships with team members and expressing your interest can help you get noticed.
    • Expressing Interest: Formally express your interest in the new group to HR or the group head. Be discreet and professional about it to avoid any office politics.
    • Interviews: You may need to go through an internal interview process. Prepare thoroughly and demonstrate your fit and enthusiasm for the new group.
  3. Office Politics:

    • Confidentiality: Keep your intentions to move groups confidential. Avoid discussing your plans with other interns or colleagues who might inadvertently share the information.
    • Professionalism: Maintain a positive relationship with your current group while you explore other opportunities. This ensures you have a fallback option and good references.
  4. Feasibility and Timing:

    • Duration: Internal lateraling is generally feasible after one year, but it can depend on the firm's policies and the availability of positions. Some firms may require you to stay in your current role for a specific period, often influenced by bonus season and headcount considerations.
    • Timing: The actual move typically happens around the summer, aligning with the on-cycle recruiting for the next class of analysts.
  5. Advice from Professionals:

    • Return Offer: Prioritize securing a return offer from your current group. Many reputable banks won't consider you for internal mobility without one.
    • Proactive Approach: Be proactive in your approach. Reach out to HR and the heads of the groups you are interested in, and express your desire to intern with them in the next summer.

By following these steps and being strategic about your networking and timing, you can increase your chances of successfully lateraling to a different group within Wells Fargo after your SA internship.

Just did this. Network a ton both within your group and other groups at the firm. Be really excellent at your job and have a great attitude. They won't let you transfer unless you get a return offer for your current group.

Mirroring this, have had friends network a ton during their SA and end up getting RO placement from CLT to NYC in way better groups
