What programming language should a college freshman learn for investment banking?
I'm trying to pick a programming language to learn. I'm about to be a first year in college and I want to go into IBD. I'm not sure even how useful knowing how to program is for IBD but i want to learn a language either way. So, what would be the best language for me to learn?
You will not be doing programming in investment banking. Just learn how to do simple models to enhance your application. Learning a programming language with no intent to use it is just a huge waste of time.
Realistically, probably VBA. Even though I don't think you'll get that much use of it (but hey, being the local Excel guru is always nice).
As of lately, I've been seeing more and more SQL in analyst job ads. Usually in conjuncture with SAP, but that's more on the business side of things. Either way, SQL is nice to know, if you like working with data.
Purely on a hobby basis, you could try to pick up Python. Super easy to get into, and there's a ton of resources. If I were you, I'd start to dabble with programming just for the challenge and fun of it (FWIW I've been programming for 15 years now), not out of (job) skill expectations.
