What should an engineer do to get a jon in an Investment Bank?
First up im 17, im really interested in IB what must i do to get into IB after i get my engineering degree? I desire to work in the more front office roles facing the clients. The trading floor would be my dream. Also is it wise to ditch Tech for a career in Finance?
What is it about the industry that is actually attractive to you? Your post makes clear that you have (understandably) limited familiarity with the industry, and I would just encourage you to really think about Why you want to enter finance over some other industry you may be more familiar or otherwise better aligned with. My parents forced me to study engineering, and I wanted to be on a trading floor, so I became an algo developer. This is vastly different from the work in IB and I do not interface with anyone from IB on literally any occasion because this is a completely separate business function within an investment bank. When you can differentiate these things and establish a clear goal job in the industry, go for it. But I would encourage you not to blindly pursue a job in this industry just because you heard it was cool or prestigious — that is so insignificant compared to a life spent solving interesting problems in an industry you have genuine passion for. Best of luck
well i personally dont like coding, i was really intrigued about the stock market, and i also love reading case studies about some companies like how they beat their competiton etc etc. I cant explain as of yet but something in me when i looked at what an Investment banker does sparked and i wanted to go that field ever since. I plan on doing an MBA after my engineering
These reasons are not great reasons (with all respect).
Make sure you know what investment banking is and whether or not the work/deals actually interest you...
In the nicest way possible, if you want to succeed you will need a much more thorough and backed-up answer to that question
The tech vs banking guys are fuming rn.
I've got the exact same background (engineering), exact same story (hate coding, love trading/markets).
What if I tell the hiring manager that I'm willing to quit my engineering college to work at an IB, doesn't matter if it's in their mailroom or anywhere just to get the opportunity to show my passion for reading markets news, valuating companies, gain exposure, etc. and go on and on for a few minutes, basically telling about the work done and perks of being at IB, should'nt that be enough?
No. That makes no sense. Formulate an answer based on what the job actually is, its impact and facts about it. Saying you’d sleep in the MD’s office floor and hand shred his documents for free makes you sound crazy.
im someone who feels tech will play a huge role in the future of investment banking, stuff like blockchain and data processing and cloud . I wanna shift to a career in IB since i love finance, as a kid i was really intrigued about channels like cnbc etc. Coding though is a good job it doesnt make you meet a lot of people everyday, you're more of an unsung hero in IT but in finance and investment banking in particular you are right there making deals with clients, formulating models for their businesses and give them advice. Trading is also an exciting part of IBs and also im very attracted to the exit opportunities that IB has like we can move into pvt equity, hedge funds etc. but in IT i dont have a lot of exit opportunities so in a way IBs are a place for everybody ,the computer guys can be in the back and middle offices and those with a niche in finance and communication can handle the front office roles.Obviously pay is a motivating factor too but its more of the fact tht i get to build relationships to people, help businesses get better that excites me go for IBs
People in IB advise to network our ass off if we want to get into IB, send 100s of cold e-mails and messages and stuff. Could you tell me where to find the email IDs for the purpose of cold emailing and networking (except on LinkedIn)? I already use LinkedIn and am networking there a lot, but very few number of bankers mention their email ID's on LinkedIn, is there any other way? Thank You.
Let me guess.....you're Indian?
K
yeah so?
So the advise here is pretty simple.
Ocr is basically the only way to get into banking.
If you're a science student, start preparing for jee and bitsat to get into the top iit or bits. Both colleges are targeted by banks for analyst level roles.
If that doesn't work out , prepare for cat to make it to one of the old iim's,FMS, xlri or isb.Banks recruit from there.
That's about it really.
For reference it really helps if you state clearly what country you're from/recruiting for since that will affect what you have to do massively. I know you've done it here eventually but just in general, make sure you let people know.
Fyi, you are not an engineer, just a engineering student. Ur major won’t matter too much for ib recruiting tbh. Just figure out the why banking answer and network as everyone else does
oh ok so if i have a concrete answer for that, and get an MBA from a pretty good B school in the US it should be enough right?
