What to do after getting rejected?
I just got rejected from a BB after a superday, and have no idea what to do. I thought it went well, and I had people pulling for me, but didn't get the offer.
Background: Nontarget with no alumni network, and nondiversity. 3.97 GPA and several finance internships. I have had first rounds at 2 banks, and superday'd at another. I have been preping hard for interviews, and am solid on technical and behavioral questions. My conversations seem to go well with bankers, and they often say that I seem like a good fit for the office, but I dont get interviews or offers there.
With everything going on, it seems like banks are less likely to take nontarget students this year. Should I start trying to apply to smaller banks, or look at jobs outside banking? I am completely lost here and have no idea what to do to land an offer.
Sorry to hear that. It's devastating when you don't get the offer especially when you felt like the interviews went well, but keep your head up. I don't think applying to smaller banks and applying to jobs outside of banking are mutually exclusive. Just put yourself in the best position. Good luck!
You do the same thing when you get rejected by a girl. Go for the next one. Just because one bank said no doesn't mean another one wouldn't hire you. Take one day off, and on day 2 you go out and prep for the next interview.
This
Come on. This happens to everyone.
Do you know how low offer rates can be for superdays? Do you know how subjective offer decisions can be?
Let this be a lesson. 1) get hungry, because nobody is entitled an offer because they had a superday. 2) learn from any mistakes you may have made. If you don’t think you made any, reflect harder.
Anyway, it’s incredibly early in the cycle. Lose the bad attitude and get back to work
I know it sucks because it’s already difficult enough to get interviews from a non-target, but you just have to keep grinding. It’ll be worth it.
A rejection from a girl, school or bank doesn’t devalue you as a human being nor your credentials necessarily. There will always be variance in every stage interview or super day you go to, and sometimes it will just not be your day.
Try to disassociate your effort with the outcome and rinse and repeat. Learn what you can from the rejection, ask for feedback and move to the next firm.
I was rejected from a bank last year (American BB) at an interview, applied this year and got an offer from the first super day they held. Difference? Not better networking, nor god tier work experience, but by disassociating myself from the Yes or No at the end of day. Do I want the offer? Yes - therefore I will prepare my best, but I won’t kill myself over it.
That makes you perform your best and removes the feeling of ‘grindiness’ that is involved with applications. Don’t let rejections change your self worth, and do your best.
