When do you normally get a lease for NYC for a SA stint?

Got an offer for a firm in NYC for SA2021, have several pals who will be in the city as well. When, under normal stances, would an incoming intern(s) find a place to live? Any particular advice due to COVID?

As others have said, finding a rental for a couple months isn’t really that easy to do in nyc, especially for “nicer” apts (and be careful when throwing that word around as it can mean a lot of money in nyc, realize you are probably just talking about a standard rental though).

Your best bet is probably long term Airbnb, you can always try with StreetEasy and see if you find a short term rental, although not very likely (in a time like now with covid much more likely, but also likely you are wfh). Try reaching out to a few places but landlords don’t want a short term rental.

You generally can't lock up a lease in NY more than a month in advance, especially for short term summer leases. There are some exceptions, like buildings / companies that focus specifically on summer intern housing or university dorms, but that's not the norm and generally these facilities will be below market in terms of quality and may be closer to college housing than an actual apartment

Most interns do NYU housing because no landlord will rent you something for 2 months. As mentioned above, the companies that do intern housing are still quite expensive for low end places.

If budget is really no issue and you want to lock something down in advance, go AirBNB. You'll get a discount for the extended stay and won't have to worry about furnishings. book ASAP before places start getting weekend bookings for next summer
