Definitely wait till maybe a month before Placement Day. You want people to remember you when they fill out the placement forms and you also don't want to be irritating by scheduling calls so soon.
I personally began very very early to express my interest in groups. After my initial calls, I’d catch up with them over the phone every two months or so. Got my top choice in the end, which is one of the top at my bank (mid tier BB).

The process is different at every bank and I can't speak to CS - but I would err on the side of waiting til much closer to placement day.
In my experience - placement day was in March and I started seriously networking with the main group I was interested in late Jan - giving myself time to build up a good momentum but not be overwhelming.
Its about being top of mind at the right time, imo. Best of luck!
FYI I think sponsors recruits separately from the main pool of candidates, so I'm not sure you can network your way into that specific group. :(
