Will case competitions help me for IB?

New user here. Tried to search for this question but couldn't find anything. I'm a current freshman at a semi-target, and I am debating on doing case competitions next year. They interest me, but at the same time, I don't really want to go into consulting after college. So would doing case competitions help me in any way for investment banking? Or would it be a waste of time, since I could be reading investment banking related books or studying? What would y'all recommend?

I’ve done a good number of case competitions, placed in some, won a few and went to nationals for one. I think it’s been valuable. It comes up a lot in interviews and they ask if I want to do consulting and I tell them no but I enjoy the case competitions and I mention the things I liked about them that I think about be applicable to banking: the pressure of working under tight deadlines, working hard with a team, doing a project where accountability is transparent and getting to practice my excel and PowerPoint skills. I was up until 330am on Easter working on a case competition once and that always gets a laugh

As a bit of general life advice, you shouldn't base every decision in your life on whether it will you get an investment banking job. I've interviewed dozens of candidates over the years and I can tell you I'd rather listen to someone speak to something they're passionate about, even if it has nothing to do with IBD, or even finance or business for that matter, rather than hear someone half heartedly prattle on about the 20 finance books they've read.
