Worst possible networking call
Networking for FT and I had a call today with an (american) MD at a Euro / Japanese bank. After intros I proceeded to ask him some (what I thought were?) fairly standard questions about the group structure, deal team size etc. He said I was asking too much firm-specific information and didn't answer. I said okay and asked if he could talk about an interesting transaction he worked on in the past to understand the deal process. He ended the call abruptly because the "convo wasn't going in the direction he expected."
I have an Indian accent so I guess it's reasonable to assume i was a scammer or something. Did I fuck up or was he being paranoid? Mostly worried about any repercussions since he has my resume and high enough to blacklist or flag to other banks since the group he works in is pretty specific. Should I move on or reach out over email and apologize?
2. Move-on. There won’t be repercussions but you aren’t getting any value out of this connection
what would you recommend asking?
Have an actual conversation with people. If you’re speaking with an MD there are literally so many questions you can ask them about their career, their life, anything. Like you ask them about the hardest moment in their career, any other career paths they considered or almost took, etc etc. It just shouldn’t seem forced or like you’re reading off a list of questions
You asked about DEAL TEAM size? Yes that would seem very strange for a first conversation
No this is a standard thing to ask on networking calls. Just not to MDs.
this question is one that is usually asked by sales/business development reps of financial data providers. lmao not as a prospective intern
Sir thank you for taking the time - I would like to know how many bathrooms are on the floor
As mentioned by others I think this was a reflection of your questions rather than background / ethnicity, I don’t believe he thinks you are a scammer.
You could have asked anything about key trends they are seeing, issues clients are facing, ECM/ DCM markets are opening - driving M&A activity what does he think the pipeline will look like into 2026, etc.
Don't ask textbook questions that can be answered by Google.
what are some of your favourite non-textbook questions then?
Well are you a scammer? Kinda seems like you're trying to scam the man.
Do the needful
Lol ure indian
