i worked both when i was a banker... got called in at 7am on new year's day, after leaving the office at 10pm on New Years Eve.

don't let horror stories scare you off. i for one am not working monday, back to work tuesday, then out weds through the following monday. i also have a bunch of friends at different banks that are taking the whole week off.
I worked yesterday on Xmas and will be here on NYE and New Year's. it is what it is man, that's what makes the bonus so fulfilling.
I-banking can be a pleasant job if its not staffed with insecure people. I'm not stepping into the office from 22 Dec till 03 Jan (though I'll be tying up loose ends if needed from home).
I'm currently in I-banking. (not with a BB though) I'm happy where I am because my VPs and MDs are not as insecure as the MDs in BBs. I've pulled all nighers for weeks in rows and work 70-100 weeks when necessary but not for silly pitch books which were not needed (if MDs would have the confidence and balls to clarify what clients wanted a lot of all nighters could well be avoided).
So working on Xmas and New Year's clearly depends on live deal status and whether ur MDs, associates or VPs have enuf confidence to ask and not presume the worse.
If Ibanking were filled with less insecure masochists, it would actually be a tenable life long career (if your partner is understanding, supportive and not needy individuals).
I agree with ke18sb, i know hardly of anyone working on xmas or nye. I work at a bb and most of my group and people i know in other groups are taking a week off. There are a few people working during the week, but its because they already took vacations earlier and volunteered to stay behind just in case somethin came up.
I find it really juvenile and retarded that some bbers try to make it seem like they work long hours just because its cool or to validate the fact they define their lives by their job.

Out of curiosity, when do senior bankers/MD's usually start vacation for Christmas/New Year's?
Originally was going to talk with an MD last friday, but he ended up not calling. Sent an email at the end of the day asking if/when he would next be available, but no response yet.
Usually I would just wait ~5 days and email again, but with Christmas and New Year's coming up, will MD's/senior level people even be working these next 2 weeks? Should I just wait until the new year to try again? Thanks, and sorry for the neurotic question (i hate these, but fuck this has been bothering me lol)

I know an ED at a BB that has off this Thursday through new years.
Try the MD after the Tues or Wed after New Years. The guy wants to spend time with his family before then. Don't call him the Monday after bc he'll need to get back up-to-speed on work that day.

Im in PE but i get off Christmas Eve and then come back Jan. 2nd. Going to the rose bowl to watch the Badgers get run over (hopefully)
everybody is off. I left my BB floor at midnight and was literally the last person left. Just consider for a moment that there are some normal people working in banking who have families and priorities outside of executing deals.
Yeah, banks have an early close tomorrow and are closed Friday. Apart from that a lot of senior people don't show up and take week long vacations. I know one MD who took this whole week, another who left today and won't be back until Wednesday. You can trying calling middle of next week, but if you have some time, try calling after New Years when most people are in the office.

Stuck w/ colleagues opening up presents around the office tree amidst the typical spreadsheet grind? Or off the grid somewhere laying on a caribbean beach with m/b/xmas-bonus in hand?

As a college prospective monkey, I'll be on a caribbean beach in exactly 2 days.
We convinced the MD that Friday is Christmas eve and we were given a half day.
In Banking - come in and "work" every day to ensure that you have enough vacation days to bolt early at the end of your 2-year stint / cash out vacation days
In PE - Off from Dec. 23nd to Jan. 3rd
Off four days this weekend and four days for NYE weekend, part of the skeleton crew in the office the week between to watch a bunch of nothing tick by on our screens.
I'm in IT (non-finance) looking to make the move to finance. So for now I'm still going to enjoy a 4-day weekend trip to Santa Barbara with my girl and then golf back home in Palm Springs at PGA West on the Nicklaus course (hard!) on Tuesday, also with my girl (it was a gift from her).
One of the perks of being on the corporate side....
Tomorrow is my last day until Jan 3rd. I'm going to relax up until Christmas, then spend some time with the wife and families for Christmas. Early Dec 26th - commence the annual guys gambling trip
Hoping to gtfo of here for next week. Our group seems to have a general policy where if you're not on a live deal you don't need to come in.
in corpdev...took vacation starting Dec 17 and will be back in the office on Jan 3.
Plus taking another week and a half in March for a little getaway.
The beauty of corporate life...30 days of vacation annually and I usually use most of them! :)
