A Dreamer Looking for Advice: What Should I Do?
Hello WSO Community,
Short Story: I'm a senior at NYU, graduating in January with no finance experience. I'm currently working at a CRE Brokerage, which also has an attached financial brokerage. I really want a job in finance. I love thinking about economics and finance from an intellectual perspective. I know I have what it takes, but don't know how to prove it. What steps should I take?
Ask: Would you be interested in speaking with me?
Longer Story: I'm a current senior, Undergrad at NYU Gallatin --- (I created my own major called "Making Sense of the World -- Understanding the Constitution of Subjectivity and Intellectual Sources of the Self"). I haven't taken any strict finance courses, but one course: Finance for Social Theorists made me very interested in the financial industry and intellectual concepts in finance such as Black Scholes, Black Swan events, the Shadow Banking System, credit cycles, the theory of reflexivity, theories regarding volatility, and more. However, I took that class way too late. But since taking it, I can't get the possibility of having a career on wall street out of my mind. (Even at my job, I'm fascinated with the content of the financial news that's on television.) Do banks take people with no experience, like me? My GPA is low, but I can have stellar recommendations. I can also prep for technicals and learn how to model. I just don't want to dedicate all that effort if I don't know what to do after I have that knowledge. I would appreciate any guidance.
