Aiming for NYC (from a non-target)

I recently received all of my college decisions and I have decided to attend University of Wisconsin - Madison as an undergraduate. I realize that the school I chose is far from what would be considered a target, but apparently the Investment Banking club at UWM helps a lot of students get analyst positions both in Chicago and sometimes NYC straight out of college. My question is: how difficult is it really to get an offer at a branch in NYC versus one in Chicago or the west coast from a non-target like UWM? My other query is whether I will be able to participate in men's rowing in college. It will take up a lot of time and I'm not sure how that will affect my academics and networking in order to attain an internship and eventually a junior analyst offer. I've also been told by some that if I'm serious about investment banking that I should apply to transfer to a target for my junior year. Any advice, wisdom and input regarding recruitment at non-targets like Wisconsin would be greatly appreciated.

If you're from a non-target, you will have to do more leg work in securing an IB role. Hard to say exactly how difficult it will be, but know it is definitely possible and within grasp; you just have to be on the front-lines chasing after those opportunities that build up your resume. Try and secure solid internships your freshman summer and sophomore summer that can make you stand out. Don't just rely on OCR for opportunities, learn about all the kajillion internships out there and apply, apply, apply to what interests you. Many firms do not come on campus to recruit - some you have to apply directly on their website and they may never advertise the opportunity.

Athletic activities are often regarded well on resumes and will help you stand out - I say go for it and manage your time well - it can be something you speak about in interviews.

Also, UWM should have connections to banking from it's business school, so definitely leverage those alum connections; I hear Midwest schools are big on alumni loyalty. I can't speak for transferring, but see how things go in your first couple years before committing to it.

UWM is definitely not a non-target. I don't know too much about recruiting there, but they have a number of people going to BX, GS, CS, etc.
