being a admin assistant at a hedge fund

Would it be possible to lateral from a position as a admin assistant to an analyst at a hedge fund? I just graduated undergrad so obviously not too many funds just take people straight out so I was just wondering since I saw a posting for the spot. Surprisingly, it pays a lot too. It says they are looking for two admin assistants to serve the IR group and the analysts. It seems unlikely to be able to do this but I just wanted some opinions.

Now listen doll, a nice dame like you could do a lot worse, ya hea'. Take the job an' find yourself a nice comp'ny man, ya hea'.

Not everyone can be Peggy Olsen, ya hea'.

It's possible, but certainly not possible. If you ended working with/for one of the partners and they think you are a hard worker and qualified and they find out that you want to be an analyst they could certainly make it happen...I just wouldn't bet money on it.

I will agree that some of those admin jobs pay a shit ton of money. The problem with trying to get one of those jobs is you either have to pretend that you really want to do admin work or tell them the truth that you are just hoping to break into the industry after some length of time, but at that point they might not even want to hire you because they know you would leave for a better opportunity when you got a chance.

I will also reiterate that you probably don't want that 'admin' tag in your resume. But who knows, I suppose anything is possible. Good luck.

It depends. If you are going to be working closely with senior people then I say go for it...but just know this is something of a tight timeline for you. If you work for more than a year or so in an admin role, then you are going to get pigeonholed and will not be evaluated seriously for front end roles. If you work for a year and jump, you can explain you were looking to be promoted into FO and it didn't work out, the position wasn't what you thought, etc.. Basically, take the job if the pay is good and you like the people, but treat it as a launching pad and leverage the heck out of your contacts from the job and your network to try to move up and out, and if you can't, then be prepared to walk after you do your time. Just my 2 cs.

its possible but, you also have to think what is going to happen if it doesnt work. Now you have options, if you spend the next 3 yrs as AA your options would narrow significantly

If you have to ask this question, this job is just right for you and you should take it.

Go to any staffing agency and tell them you want to apply for admin jobs in finance. They place at $30K to $70K depending on your experience and how much they like you. The chances of you going from admin to actual finance work are almost zero but one of my VPs did it years ago at another firm so anything is possible.

Check out albourne village and craigslist for listings. Also, nothing wrong with staffing agencies. Most jobs are being filled this way right now just due to the shit market, no one wants to get stuck with a shitty expensive fulltime employee

Thanks guys! I understand its virtually impossible to go from admin to real finance work, but I figure the first step is actually getting into a financial environment (duh lol)...which is turning out to be harder (even on a basic admin level) than I could ever imagine. Off to check out albourne village :)
