BofA Summer Internship (referral)

So I am very new to all of the internship application stuff. I am a rising sophomore in a semi-target school in NY. I started looking for internships for summer 2025 recently. I found BofA sophomore summer analyst position. I connected with a couple of people who are able to submit the referrals on my behalf. If there is anyone who applied with referral, please explain how that work.

(The guy said he did referrals before, but only for full time positions through Workday App, could this also apply for internship?) Somebody also mentioned that the referral could be in pdf and the person attached it with his resume within the application.

Referrals for IB only really have weight if they are submitted by an MD or above and even a regular MD won't get you very far. Even if you get someone very senior, you'll get a hireview at best. Not even sure if this will apply to the sophmore program as its primiarly for diversity candidates. Referrals won't hurt but likely won't do much.

I’m not really sure about this. I work at a similar mid-tier BB and referred a guy for SA, he works under me now. Probably group-specific, but any referral would hold some weight, so OP keep reaching out it never hurts.

Also like you said, it’s only gonna get you some sort of first round/hirevue at best. You’re on your own after that.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about referrals for internships, specifically for a BofA Summer Internship:

  1. Referral Process:

    • Employee Referral: When applying to IB roles online, you might be asked how you heard about the opportunity. If you have a connection who is willing to refer you, you can select "employee referral" and mention their name if they agree.
    • Submission Method: Referrals can be submitted through internal systems like Workday for full-time positions, and this process can also apply to internships. It's best to confirm with the person referring you if they can submit it through the same system for internships.
  2. Emailing the Employee:

    • If you're unsure whether the person can submit the referral through the system, you can email them your resume and ask if they can forward it to the talent acquisition team. Here's a sample email template:

Hello Name, I hope you're doing well! Thank you for taking the time last week to talk with me about your experiences with BofA. After hearing from you, I was inclined to look more into the company and was driven to apply to the BofA Summer Analyst position. Would you by any chance be comfortable with sending my resume to the talent acquisition team if possible? I'm aware it's difficult to stand out from the competition, but I have faith a referral from you would increase my chances with BofA. I can send my updated resume to you, plus a brief introduction that you can quickly forward to the talent acquisition team. Also, no worries if not, I can also send my resume directly if you're not comfortable sending it. I appreciate any help you can give. Thank you very much Name, and I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, [Your Name]
  3. Including Referral in Application:

    • If the referral is in PDF format, you can attach it along with your resume when submitting your application. This can be an effective way to ensure that your referral is considered during the application review process.
  4. Timing of Referrals:

    • It's beneficial to have referrals submitted as early as possible, especially as recruiting for summer positions gets closer. This can help your application stand out early in the process.
  5. Leverage of Recent Interns and Analysts:

    • Recent summer interns and new analysts can have some leverage in recruiting. They can forward resumes and potentially influence the hiring process by giving recommendations.

By following these steps and utilizing the referral effectively, you can increase your chances of securing a summer internship at BofA. Good luck!
