Currently work as a stock surveillance analyst - what future opportunities could i leverage from this?
I currently work at Nasdaq as a surveillance analyst in advisory services. What I do is provide insight to publicly trading companies regarding their daily stock fluctuations/trading activity (combining things like active broker activity, block trades, technical analysis, peer analysis etc to explain why the stock is trading the way it is), and shareholder movements (trying to determine who is buying and selling). A lot of the client interactions are with C suite level or IR departments within the companies. The clients use our information to determine who to target from an investor perspective, who may be creating downward/upward pressure on the stock, and potential activist intentions.
A way to think of it is with 13F filings - which come out quarterly, are filings that disclose the official holdings of an investment firm. What we do is provide share positions in real time that normally come out on a quarterly basis to our clients. Example would be Pershing bought 5m shares of a client during the first quarter of 2020. The client would not know that Pershing was in the stock until filings came out after the quarter ended, but we are able to let the client know that Pershing is buying up shares DURING the quarter, so they are aware in the present and able to get ahead of it.
My question is what sort of "exit" opps could I have from this role? It is not a traditional finance role like your typical equity research or PE position. Personally, I have an interest in working in buyside, but not sure how transferable my skills would be.
Any help would be great, thanks.
