If true, I believe it is illegal in the US to discriminate against someone for a medical condition (not 100% sure though). Not sure about the UK. Did anyone put this in writing or was it all verbal?

They're not discriminating against him for a medical condition - they're discriminating against him for his school deferral. Not sure if that's legal though...

It seems you don't have one without the other to me and they know that. Anyway, I'm probably getting off point here and will stop now.
 

Is the deferral tied to a one-time medical situation or is it a result of an ongoing ailment? If its the latter, I can see why they would be hesitant.

 

this makes me wonder how many people on wso tend to record their phone conversations with potential employers, or even live interactions like interviews...
